Frequently asked questions
HOW MUCH SHOULD I COPY WITH?
eToro’s CopyTrader™ system requires that:
‣ The amount invested in a single trader stands between $500 and $2,000,000.
‣ The minimum amount for a copied trade is $2*; trades below this will not be opened.
What does it imply if you decide to copy my profile @howtogetref?
My current popular investor level (“Elite“) requires me to hold equity of $25,000.
Still, I’m well above that (in the six digits) and, as I’m diversifying towards hundreds of assets, I do have smaller position sizes.
As a result,
✅ Minimum amount: $2000+ is REQUIRED IF you wish to duplicate my existing trades and future day trading activities.
✅ Recommended amount: $3000+ is not a requirement, but it does help to have a perfectly synchronized start. The reason is that it ensures “oldest” positions are duplicated immediately.
When the market makes my equity proliferate, I regularly increase my positions’ size to remain the same exposition (%). By adding such an amount, you make sure to copy those smaller residual positions from day one.
But do not worry if you can’t do so, as our core portfolio usually refreshes quickly (within 1-3 months), and their weight is low.
? What are other people doing?
Currently, my copiers hold an average investment of $4324 with @howtogetref. (Last update: 01/03/2021).
‣ Existing copiers (who already copied core positions) are OK with $1600 in equity.
‣ I’m working towards renewing my trades with a larger size so that $1600 becomes sufficient for new copiers (the expected time of completion is one to three months).
? Understanding the math behind it, with an example:
Let’s say my current equity is $175K,
and I’m opening trades with a size of $175.
Each position weighs 0.1% of the equity (175/175000 = 0.001), and they need to be worth at least $2.00 on your side to open.
That’s why your account needs to be at least $2000 (2/0.001 = 2000).
If the markets were favorable, we could imagine that the equity increased from 125K to 175K; and that the portfolio still includes a few $125 positions from that time.
Reminder: we usually have a 1 to 3 months hold average.
Those positions weights now 0.0714% of the equity (125/175000 = 0.000714), and your equity would need to be $2800+ (2/0.000714 = 2801).
The recommended amount of $3000+ allows you to cover those cases, but keep in mind, it’s only a small optimization and not required at all.
The percentages of smaller positions, if any, should be relatively low.
Moreover, within a few weeks, they are likely to be closed.
